49ers may face Colts QB who hasn’t played in 5 seasons

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 15 matchup with the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, but the week after, they’ll face the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Indianapolis lost starting quarterback Daniel Jones to a torn Achilles this past week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and with 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson on injured reserve with a fractured orbital bone, the Colts are down to Riley Leonard and Brett Rypien (practice squad) at the position.

With that, Indianapolis is looking outside the building for a starting quarterback, and according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, they’re bringing in Philip Rivers for a workout.

Rivers, 44, last played for the Colts in 2020 after spending the previous 16 years with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. In his career, he made eight Pro Bowls while completing 64.9% of his passes for 63,440 yards, 421 touchdowns and 209 interceptions.

If Rivers were to sign with the Colts, the 49ers may have an interesting week of preparation for a quarterback who hasn’t thrown a pass in the league in five seasons.
