From poor clock management to an inability to generate offense in the second half, LaFleur is taking heat for Green Bay’s meltdown. And after six disappointing playoff exits in his seven years in Green Bay, some are wondering whether this latest loss will prompt the Packers to move on. So far, there’s no indication of that happening. In fact, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported before the game the sides were expected to meet after the season to discuss extending LaFleur’s contract, which expires after next season.
Perhaps, the loss to Chicago makes the Packers reconsider the extension, though there’s certainly a case to keep LaFleur around. Despite a 3-6 playoff record, including first-round exits the last two years, he’s 76-40-1 in the regular season and has only missed the playoffs once. If the Packers were to let him go, he’d immediately become one of the hottest names on the coaching market. So, it seems unlikely they’d fire him outright. But with plenty of talented coaches available for hire right now, you never know.
