For the Iowa Hawkeyes, close losses have become an unfortunate theme through the early part of Big Ten play. Iowa is competing against the best of the best in the conference, but they are coming up just short. For Ben McCollum’s squad, the close loss to Purdue stings, as the Hawkeyes held a nine-point lead at one point.
Having a top team not just in the Big Ten, but the entire country, on the ropes is great, but for Iowa to get where they want to go, these are games they have to close out. Point guard Bennett Stirtz discussed what it’s going to take and how the Hawkeyes bounce back from this string of tight losses.

“Suffering makes you better. It’s what you do in these moments that make you better. I think you’ve got to have a short-term memory and next play attitude, next game attitude. Once we get home to Iowa City tonight, it’s back at it tomorrow morning,” Stirtz said about how the Iowa Hawkeyes rebound from these close losses.
Sitting at 12-5, the Hawkeyes have just one loss by double digits, a road loss to the Michigan State Spartans. The Hawkeyes lost to Iowa State by four, Minnesota by three, Illinois by six, and Purdue by seven.
Iowa is hanging around, and in the gauntlet that is Big Ten play, it is bound to get the ball to bounce its way at some point, but the Hawkeyes need that to happen sooner rather than later to avoid a free fall in NCAA Tournament seeding.
