It’s been a tough weekend for the Chicago Bears after falling to the Los Angeles Rams 20-17 in overtime in the divisional round of the playoffs, and a day later, their team is already undergoing significant changes. According to NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are set to hire Bears running backs coach Eric Bieniemy to be their offensive coordinator. It was announced Bieniemy would be interviewing for the position that he once had from 2018 through 2022 early Monday, and it seems the process moved quickly to bring him back.
Bieniemy joined head coach Ben Johnson’s staff last winter as the team’s running back coach after a failed stint as UCLA’s offensive coordinator. He helped ignite a struggling Bears rushing attack in 2025 with D’Andre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai. The Bears finished the season with the third-best rushing offense, averaging 144.5 yards per game on the ground. Swift turned in a career year, producing 1,087 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, while Monangai became a strong second option, rushing for 783 yards and five scores.

The Bears’ ground game turned heads this past season, and it helped Bieniemy get back into an offensive coordinator role. He takes over for former Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who replaced Bieniemy back in 2023 when the 56-year-old left for the Washington Commanders. With Nagy no longer under contract and expected to get another head coaching job, Bieniemy reunites with Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
