Browns legend claps back at Baker Mayfield’s dig at Kevin Stefanski

The Baker Mayfield-Kevin Stefanski controversy appears to be far from over, a day after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback took a big shot at his former coach. Mayfield and Stefanski spent two seasons together (2020-21). They were off to a magical start in 2020, taking the Browns to an 11-5 record and the only playoff win during the Stefanski era.

After the 2021 season, things went sour between the play caller and the coach. The Browns shipped Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers, as they traded for Deshaun Watson, who would then get a record five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million deal.

Mayfield didn’t forget about how things went down in Cleveland, let alone how Stefanski treated him afterward. While disputing a report where his tenure was described as a “dumpster fire” of a quarterback room, Mayfield took a jab at his former coach.

“Failed is quite the reach pal. Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage. Can’t wait to see you twice a year, Coach,” Mayfield wrote on Monday.

A lot has been said about this situation. Browns legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Thomas took issue with Baker Mayfield’s way of handling this situation. He sent a message on social media to let Mayfield he could have taken another route.

“I could be wrong…but I’ve heard that communication is a 2-way street and there were no laws against you (Baker) sending Stefanski a text or calling him after you got traded,” Thomas responded.
