‘They’ve Made Good On Their End Of The Bargain’: Todd McLellan Reveals Simple Strategy For Playing The Detroit Red Wings Youth

The kids are alright.

The Detroit Red Wings won another hockey game last night. The victim this time was the Seattle Kraken, who felt the wrath of Patrick Kane in the shootout. The Red Wings walked away with a 5-4 victory.

Many veterans contributed to the Red Wings win, but so did the youth. Kane worked his magic in the shootout, but the team wouldn’t have gotten there without Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Jonatan Berggren, and Elmer Soderblom.

Surprisingly, the oldest player out of that quadruplet is Berggren, who potted his ninth goal of the season on a second-period powerplay. Meanwhile, the youngest, Raymond, continued his tremendous season by scoring his 21st goal of the year.

Soderblom stepped up in a big way on Tuesday night. Along with his second goal of the season, he threw two hits, had two blocked shots, and four shots while playing 13:46.

So yeah, the kids are alright.

After the game, head coach Todd McLellan was asked about Soderblom’s and Berggren’s contributions in his post-game scrum with the media present in Seattle.

“Trent Yawney and I don’t have past experience,” McLellan said. “Everything’s brand new for us. We just play them and see what we get out of them.”

“They’ve responded. They’ve made good on their end of the bargain when they play hard and keep themselves in the lineup.”

The strategy has worked for Berggren and Soderblom, and Marco Kasper has also benefited from this mentality. His ascension to the top line is tough to ignore. The young forward recorded an assist in 19:03 against the Kraken.

The Red Wings go home, having won all four games on this road trip.

All because of the kids on their roster who are definitely alright.
