Jay Johnson talks LSU baseball’s Casan Evans ahead of 2026

LSU baseball must retool its pitching core after losing starters Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson as well as reliever Chase Shores. One reliever from last season seems poised to take the next step.

Casan Evans came through when called upon in big moments as a true freshman. In 2025, he mixed high-leverage relief innings with the occasional spot start, which rolled into longer appearances during the NCAA Tournament.

“I think there’s something about getting to the College World Series, that, and competing in it, and he did, obviously, at the highest level,” head coach Jay Johnson said, “He closed out game one against Arkansas, which was probably the best team in the country last year. And then immediately, two days later, three days later, with the rain out coming in and giving us four and two-thirds against a really good UCLA team.”

Evans started three games and picked up three saves in SEC play. He pitched 11.1 innings in the NCAA Tournament, including six in a start against Little Rock, and finished with 18 strikeouts. He’s no stranger to high-pressure situations one year into his collegiate career.

“I don’t know [if] there’s a more important player that we’ve recruited here,” Johnson said. “He’s obviously got a lot of ability, but the makeup, the character, the competitiveness, kind of those three things I just talked about and outlined, I’m not worried about that guy getting himself ready to compete and to win. And a model player in that regard.”
