With Manchester United out of the FA Cup, there’s no match for them this weekend, and Paul Scholes has taken the opportunity to have a go at his former club.
Fletcher’s side couldn’t get past Brighton at Old Trafford. Benjamin Sesko found the net, but it wasn’t enough to spark a turnaround.

Shea Lacey was sent off in that game and hasn’t featured for the first team since, despite impressing when given chances. Now, with United out until 2027, attention in the area shifts to another matchup closer to home.

Not being part of the FA Cup is a setback for United, especially since Michael Carrick probably would have led them to a win, giving them another chance at silverware.
On the other hand, it has given the squad time to fully focus on securing Champions League football, using two important weeks on the training ground.
Speaking on Salford City’s TikTok, Paul Scholes made light of United’s absence from the competition in a way that also referenced his own club.

“Last year was the first time we reached the third round of the cup. From where we were 10 years ago to now is fantastic. We have to enjoy it, and this season we’ve even gone further than Manchester United in the FA Cup.”
This comes before Salford’s match against Manchester City scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United can’t afford another season without a cup run
There are just 12 games left this season, a strange reality shaped by early exits from both domestic cups.
Along with the FA Cup defeat to Brighton, United’s loss to Grimsby in the League Cup was especially damaging, and it could have easily cost Amorim his job.

This can’t happen again next year.
United need to be competing deep into both competitions. The additional matches not only provide valuable rotation options but also give young players more opportunities to play meaningful minutes.
And with European football looking likely – maybe even a return to the Champions League – fixture congestion won’t be an excuse anymore.
