Manchester United have formally issued Marcus Rashford the club’s vacant No. 9 shirt, seemingly putting an end to speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
Rashford had been expected to join Barcelona permanently after an impressive loan spell last season, only for the La Liga giants to look elsewhere. With just over a week left in the transfer window, a move now appears increasingly unlikely.
Seemingly resigned to keeping hold of Rashford, United confirmed the England international will wear the team’s No. 9 jersey this season after it was vacated by Rasmus Højlund’s departure to Napoli.
Rashford had been wearing the 9 during preseason but had not been formally issued the jersey. Indeed, he did not have a shirt number on the matchday program for Saturday’s meeting with Hull City.

Senne Lammens joins Rashford in snapping up a new number this season. The starting goalkeeper has claimed the No. 1 jersey, previously held by Altay Bayındır but freed up by his loan to Celta Vigo this summer.
Lammens had worn the No. 31 in his debut season, but that jersey has now been handed to 19-year-old attacking midfielder Shea Lacey, who jumps up from 46.
United’s new signings have also seen their jersey numbers formally confirmed. Karl Darlow wears 12, Andrey Santos gets 17, 18 has been handed to Youri Tielemans and young winger Tynan Thompson has been allocated 27.
Right at the bottom of the squad list is 15-year-old starlet JJ Gabriel, who has been allocated the number 77. A preseason appearance made him the youngest player to ever represent United, although the fact it came in a friendly means it is not recognized as the official record.
Should Gabriel take to the pitch before Oct. 25, he will formally become United’s youngest player of all time.
A handful of numbers have been left vacant, with one set to be handed to midfielder Carlos Baleba when he completes his move from Brighton & Hove Albion. His preferred 17 has already been taken, but he does have recent experience with both 20 and 24 on his back.
