Why UCLA’s Week 1 Game Could Set Tone for Season

There’s a ton of intrigue for Bob Chesney and the Bruins as UCLA enters its first season under the former James Madison head coach. 

We’ve looked at UCLA’s season and even predicted the Bruins’ overall record. But which game is the most important on the schedule, and which matchup gives UCLA the best opportunity to build confidence?

Early Road Test To Begin the Season

We don’t have to search deep in the schedule to find our answer. The first game on Sept. 5 should present UCLA with plenty of opportunities to jump-start a successful season. Whether or not they take advantage of them is the better question.

For starters, with a team that has as many new faces as UCLA, it was always going to be difficult to hit the ground running. A roster full of transfers and freshmen doesn’t usually lead to strong starts in college sports. The Bruins, however, have a chance to change that narrative.

Cal isn’t an easy opponent, and though they don’t present the heights of a challenge that Oregon or Michigan will, it’s not an easy first game to walk into, especially on the road.

UCLA has heard a lot of noise from public opinion this season, and most of it has been negative. A lot of that negative commentary falls on the shoulders of quarterback Nico Iamaleava. 

Can the Bruins Quiet the Criticism?

Walking into a hostile environment in Week 1 should give Iamaleava all the opportunity to quiet the criticism and prove to himself that he has what it takes. If he can succeed in that game, his confidence should be able to ride that wave through the next few, allowing UCLA to get off to a fast start on the season. 

On the contrary, a sluggish start could undermine the Bruins’ confidence level, and if that negativity bleeds into Week 2 against an underrated San Diego State team, the Bruins could start 0-2 before they even hit conference play. 

That’s certainly not the kind of thing you want to see if you’re a Bruins fan. Not to put even more pressure on this Bruins team, but that Cal game coming up seems like it could carry a lot of weight for the rest of the season.

The season is only two weeks away, and Bruins fans have a lot to look forward to. This season holds a lot of potential, and if UCLA can get things going quickly, good things could be in store.
