Unicorn.
This is a phrase some hockey aficionados have used to describe power-forward-type players. However, the Detroit Red Wings can use this term to describe one of their best players.
Because there is no one else like him in the league, and every other team in the league would kill for a player like this.
Of course, I’m speaking about Moritz Seider.
Seider has offensive consistency and defensive prowess and has the potential to rise higher in both fields.
Great Offense
While he hasn’t blown the doors off regarding point production — he’s awfully consistent.
He is currently in his fourth season and has not scored less than 40 points in a year since entering the league. His rookie season was actually his best offensively, as he tallied seven goals and 43 points while playing 23 minutes a night.
For the 2024-25 season, he is averaging 0.62 points per game. He will finish the year with 51 points if he keeps up that production.
Seider presently has 34 points in 55 games. However, 16 of those 34 points have come in the last 21 games, which is a 0.76 point-per-game-pace. If he continues at that pace for the rest of the season, he could finish the year with 54 points.

Faces Elite Competition More Than Anyone Else
The Red Wings use Seider in all situations. He is used heavily against the top players on opposing teams and has played the most time on ice against the top players in the league.
According to PuckIQ, he has played 461 even-strength minutes against the best players in the NHL. That is the most out of any defenders across the league. The next highest are Jaccob Slavin (431) and Gustav Forsling (430).
Slavin is a name that is synonymous with defensive prowess. To be in the same ballpark as him is a home run for the Red Wings.
Moritz Seider may be young, but Simon Edvinsson looks up to Mo, with his bounce back ability.

Still Has Potential To Reach
Seider still has room to grow. The Red Wings’ number-one defender is only 23 years old, so he is still working towards his prime hockey years. To that end, he’s only played 301 NHL games.
He is proficient at both ends of the ice and is among the most utilized players in the NHL.
He ranks fifth in ice time among all players who have played at least 10 games this season. Only Zach Werenski, Cale Makar, Mikhail Sergachev, and Quinn Hughes play more per game than he does.
When you find yourself a unicorn, keep and treat it well. And for now, that appears to be what the Red Wings are doing.
