The iconic Borderlands video game franchise, known for its blend of looter-shooter gameplay and fantastical lore, is making its way to the big screen in what promises to be an exciting cinematic universe. Directed by Eli Roth, the upcoming borderlands movie adaptation brings to life the beloved characters and quirky world Borderlands.
In anticipation of the film’s release, IGN had an exclusive chat with Roth and Randy Pitchford, the founder of Gearbox Entertainment and an executive producer on the movie. The camaraderie between the two was evident, reflecting the same playful spirit that defines the Borderlands series.
Roth, entrusted with creative freedom, felt the weight of adapting such a beloved franchise. However, Pitchford’s openness to new ideas ensured a collaborative process. Even suggestions as whimsical as how Claptrap might expel bullets were welcomed with enthusiasm.
For Pitchford, who had turned down previous requests for film adaptations of his studio’s work, the decision to greenlight the Borderlands movie came after bonding with producer Ari Arad over video games. Their shared passion and frequent gaming sessions led to the realization that the time was right for a cinematic venture.
Set on the fictional planet of Pandora, the film follows the adventures of Lilith and a motley crew as they search for a missing girl who holds the key to the universe’s fate. While not adhering strictly to the game’s canon, the movie draws from the rich tapestry of characters across the franchise.
The star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kevin Hart, brings these characters to life in unexpected ways. Roth’s vision for the film was to assemble a diverse and eclectic ensemble, resulting in a cast that captures the essence of Borderlands’ eccentricity.
Blanchett’s involvement, in particular, was a testament to her trust in Roth, stemming from their previous collaboration. Curtis was swayed by her daughter’s enthusiasm for the franchise, while Black’s long-standing connection to Borderlands made his casting as Claptrap a natural choice.
Ultimately, the Borderlands movie promises to deliver the same sense of fun and adventure as its gaming counterpart. Fans can mark their calendars for its release in U.S. theaters on August 9, 2024, courtesy of Lionsgate.
