The Anaheim Ducks have acquired goaltender Ville Husso from the Detroit Red Wings. The Ducks’ goaltending depth has been depleted recently with Tomáš Suchánek suffering a torn ACL prior to the start of the season and Calle Clang now month-to-month with an injury of his own.
John Gibson is currently day-to-day with an upper-body injury, forcing the Ducks to recall Oscar Dansk from the San Diego Gulls. That left Vyachselav Buteyets as the sole healthy goaltender for the Gulls.
The Ducks were able to address that issue by acquiring Husso for future considerations on Tuesday. He will report to the Gulls.
The Red Wings signed Husso to a three-year, $14.25 million deal with a $4.75 milllion cap hit during the summer of 2022. He had just finished up a breakout season with the St. Louis Blues and while he didn’t fare very well in the playoffs, he showed that he was capable of being a starting goaltender in the NHL.
However, he failed to register a SV% over .900 and never had a positive GSAx in over the next three seasons. This season, he was waived by the Red Wings and went unclaimed.
He’s displayed good numbers at the AHL level this season while playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins, sporting a .912 SV% and 2.70 GAA with an 8-4-0 record.
Husso, who is in the final year of his contract, will provide a solid 1-2 punch with Dansk as the Gulls make a push for the playoffs. With seven teams in the Pacific Division eligible to make it in, the Gulls are seven points out despite being ninth in the division.
