The Canucks were heavily outplayed on Friday night from an analytics perspective. Vancouver lost the even-strength scoring chances battle 27-18 while allowing 16 even-strength high-danger scoring chances compared to four generated. In the end, some extraordinary play from Kevin Lankinen and some lucky bounces made the difference as the Canucks were able to hold on for a victory.
The heatmap for this game provides a good visual of Minnesota’s dominance. The Wild were able to generate shots from all over the ice, including from right in front of Lankinen. Ultimately, this was a problematic game from a defensive perspective and one Vancouver can not replicate in the future.
As for a standout, that was Lankinen, who had one of his best games of the season. The Canucks goaltender stopped all nine high-danger shots he faced and stopped 3.13 goals above expected. With 37 total saves, Lankinen ended up being one of the main reasons Vancouver was able to skate away with a victory.
To wrap things up, the Canucks best forward line was the trio of Jake DeBrusk, Pius Suter and Brock Boeser. During their 8:07 of ice time together, Vancouver held a 4-1 shots advantage and won the scoring chances advantage 3-2. If this line can continue to win their matchup, it will go a long way in helping the Canucks pick up wins for the rest of the season.
