After the first wave of NFL free agency, what are the top three remaining positions of need for the Indianapolis Colts?
Following the first wave of NFL free agency, what is the Indianapolis Colts’ biggest remaining position of need?
If you ask Pro Football Focus, they say it’s tight end, which I don’t think anyone would argue with.
“Regardless of who wins that job, adding a premier tight end could round out a young and promising receiving corps,” wrote Max Chadwick. “Tyler Warren, if he somehow fell into the Colts’ lap at No. 14 overall, would be a dream draft pick for Indianapolis. It’s more likely that the Colts would draft Colston Loveland in that spot or wait until Day 2 to address the position.”
For one, the Colts are short on depth with Kylen Granson now with Philadelphia and Mo Alie-Cox a free agent, but more importantly, a much greater pass-catching presence is needed at this position.
However, even with tight end widely considered a top need for the Colts before free agency began, it’s not a surprise that the need hasn’t been addressed yet. This year’s free agent class at the position was quite weak, while this year’s draft class is loaded with talent.
I’m going to guess that, outside of a depth addition, GM Chris Ballard’s plan has been to address tight end in the draft.
With that said, while one can absolutely justify picking tight end as the top need, the offensive and defensive lines can’t be forgotten about either.
With the departure of Dayo Odeyingbo, that’s a lot of production–he led the defense in pressures in 2024–that’s now gone and has to be replaced. The Colts also need improved play from the defensive tackles behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart.
Losing Will Fries created a hole along the offensive line as well. While it looks like shifting Matt Goncalves to guard can provide a solution, interior depth and finding a swing tackle needs to be on Ballard’s radar.
