What if the Commanders want a cornerback when they pick at No. 29?
Which corners might be available and worthy of being selected by Washington?
ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller sat down and chatted with John Keim for a recent episode of the “Keim Report” podcast. Here’s what Miller said about some of these specific cornerbacks:
- “I like Trey Amos (Ole Miss): “He would fit that mold, I think. 23 to 31 is probably where he gets drafted. He’s physical, a press corner, who has the speed to be sticky in phase.”
- Azareye’h Thomas (FSU): “Didn’t test very well. I like him on tape; I do think he is that long, physical corner. But the speed questions are going to be there for him and push him into the second round, I think.”
- Benjamin Morrison (Notre Dame): “Had the hip injury. I like him for a first-round pick if he had not been injured. Tore labrum in his hip twice (high school and college) that raises some questions. But on tape, both Morrison and Revel are first-round players.”
- Shavon Revel Jr. (East Carolina): “(He) hurt his ACL. He too, had he not been injured was sure to be a first-round selection. So, it is a matter of where do you seem them in their rehab? How comfortable are you with guys coming back from injury? Are they going to have to take a red-shirt year?”
- Maxwell Hairston (Kentucky): “His speed shows up. He was the fastest guy at the Combine. Even watching him work through positional drills at the Combine, his footwork is elite. His feet are so quick. But he’s undersized, and I think that is going to be the key with him. Was great against Texas, was good in the Senior Bowl, but missed five games with an injury. He’s 5’11” 180 with short arms, so he doesn’t fit the mold of a big boundary corner, but as a nickel he could be a problem.”
- Nick Emmanwori (Safety – South Carolina): “If he’s there at 29, I love that pick because I’ve been calling him Derwin James 2.0. 6-3, 220 with 4.3 speed, and he had four picks last year. He’s a true junior so still an ascending player.”
- “I still like Malaki Starks (Safety – Georgia: “I know he had a down year, but as a true free safety, I am a big believer of his. I mean three years of production at Georgia, and I think they are good at producing NFL players. I think he is a safe bet.”
