Tom Izzo spoke for the first time on Wednesday about Tre Holloman’s decision to transfer away from Michigan State
Former Michigan State guard Tre Holloman surprised many when he entered the transfer portal this offseason, including his head coach.
Spartans head coach Tom Izzo held his end of the season press conference on Wednesday, which covered numerous topics around this past season and the early offseason roster updates. That included Holloman’s departure from Michigan State via the transfer portal.
Izzo was quoted saying he was “surprised” by Holloman’s decision to hit the portal and leave Michigan State, but he also understood the decision due to Holloman’s desire to play a “certain position.” Izzo also stated the backlash Holloman received for his decision to leave was “ridiculous,” according to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.
Holloman was a captain for the Spartans this past season, where he averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 assists per game as a primarily reserve player. Holloman would have contended for a starting spot next year but was expected to not be the primary point guard with Jeremy Fears Jr. returning for next season.
Holloman committed to NC State a few days ago and will wrap up his college career with the Wolfpack. He has one more year of eligibility remaining.
