The Kansas City Chiefs are set to re-shuffle their offensive line next season in a bid to shore up Patrick Mahomes’ protection in the passing game.
In a press conference on Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed to reporters that up-and-coming tackle Kingsley Suamataia, who joined Kansas City as a second-round pick in 2024, would be expected to compete for playing time at left guard next season.
Reid’s decision to have Suamataia play as a guard instead of a tackle came just months after the Chiefs achieved mixed results by desperately attempting to fix their line in the run-up to Super Bowl LIX by moving All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the left tackle spot.
It remains to be seen whether Suamataia will be able to transition to his new position successfully, but the public acknowledgement of Reid’s new strategy marks an important shift in the Chiefs’ roster construction.
With the former second-round pick set to compete for the left guard spot, Kansas City’s front office may want to target an offensive tackle with one of their early selections in the 2025 NFL draft.
