Could the Panthers land Lions WR Jameson Williams?

The Carolina Panthers might have a chance to reunite quarterback Bryce Young with, quite possibly, his favorite receiver.

With the 2025 NFL draft now just a few days away, Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer emptied out some intriguing intel from across the league. And amongst his new nuggets was the following on the upcoming deadline on the 2022 class’ fifth-year options:

Thing is, to me, if you’re on the fence on exercising the option, then you’re less likely to give the guy a blockbuster extension, so you have to consider moving him, simply because being willing to consider exercising it means he’ll likely have value to someone else.

It definitely makes you wonder if, say, the uncertain future of guys such as Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams or Giants OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux could elicit phone calls in the coming days.

Hmmm . . .

Jameson Williams, you say?

The same Jameson Williams who was the top target for Carolina’s current starting quarterback during his Heisman Trophy-winning campaign?

Yes, it’s that Jameson from that season—where Young passed for an SEC-leading 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns. Williams was also a conference leader in 2021, amassing 1,572 receiving yards and 15 receiving touchdowns.

Coincidentally, Williams is the exact type of weapon the Panthers currently lack. His game-breaking speed and ability to stretch the field would add a new element to an offense that averaged the third-fewest yards per attempt (6.2) in 2024.

But would the Lions even be willing to deal the former 12th overall pick?

Are they more interested in securing the 24-year-old, who’s coming off his first 1,000-yard season?

And if they do decide to move on, will the Panthers make a call?

Time, which may be up in the next few days, will tell.
