The Chicago White Sox have designated first baseman Bobby Dalbec for assignment.
The former Red Sox first baseman appeared in seven games for Chicago. He went 4-for-18 (.222) with a .333 on-base percentage, .278 slugging percentage, one double, one RBI, two runs, three walks and six strikeouts.
The 29-year-old will be placed on waivers. If he clears, he will be outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte. He then could accept the outright assignment and stay in the White Sox organization or decline it and become a free agent.
He has the option to elect free agency because it would be his second outright assignment.
The Red Sox are in need of a first baseman with Triston Casas out for the rest of the season after he ruptured his patellar tendon Friday. But it’s high unlikely the Red Sox and Dalbec would consider a reunion after the first baseman spent most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons with Triple-A Worcester. He felt there was little communication about his role.
“Just I didn’t know what the deal was or what they wanted my role to be and all that stuff,” Dalbec said April 21 when the White Sox called him up during a series at Fenway Park. “But looking back on it now, I wish I didn’t think about that stuff as much as I did because it’s all about playing and being ready for the game and trying to eliminate those things outta my mind which I was not very good at the last couple years. I’ve worked hard at that stuff and just making it about the game and playing and (about the) teammates.”
He lost his starting first base job with Boston during a disappointing 2022 season. He batted just .198 with a .269 on-base percentage, .330 slugging percentage and .599 OPS in 175 games (499 plate appearances) for Boston from 2022-24. He then signed a minor league deal with the White Sox this past offseason.
He said all the good memories in Boston “outweigh the bad ones.”
“There’s no hard feelings or any of that stuff,” Dalbec said. “I love everybody here and I wish ‘em all the best.”
