Luka Doncic will play for the Slovenian national team this summer

This is a pretty big summer for Luka Doncic. He will get a chance to fully acclimate to his new surroundings as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, not to mention work on his fitness and his overall game.

He has gotten lots of criticism for not being in prime physical condition, especially once the Lakers were knocked out of the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. He could be at an inflection point in his career that could determine how things will go for him over the next several years.

One thing is certain as far as what Doncic will do this summer: He will be playing for his native Slovenia at EuroBasket, which starts in late August.

Via ESPN:

“He will spend the summer playing for the Slovenian men’s national basketball team at EuroBasket, sources said,” wrote Dave McMenamin.

The 26-year-old superstar will also have some help when it comes to his fitness and conditioning.

“He’ll be accompanied by members of his ‘body team’ — Slovenian national team strength coach Anže Maček and physiotherapist Javier Barrio Calvo — throughout the offseason.”

Lakers head coach JJ Redick said on Thursday that the team in general needs to “get in championship shape.” While it may sound as if that comment was directed squarely at Doncic, he seemed to mention it as something the group needed to do collectively while adding that some players weren’t in top shape.

Collectively, this is an offseason during which everyone in the organization will need to do what is needed to get it back to a place where it will be a true championship contender when next season starts.
