Former Steelers RB Najee Harris has to compete against Omarion Hampton with the Chargers

When former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, I’m sure he saw it as an opportunity. An opportunity to be the featured back in an offense with a franchise quarterback and an excellent offensive line. A chance to finally take that next step and put himself among the league’s top running backs.

Then the 2025 NFL draft happened.

Despite signing Harris, the Chargers still spent the No. 22 overall pick on former North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton. Hampton was dominant last season and is one of those rare combinations of size, agility and acceleration. Just what Harris wants to do is get into a position battle with an elite prospect like Hampton.

The start of the 2024 season marked the beginning of the end for Harris. Pittsburgh chose not to exercise his fifth-year option and there was some scuttlebutt that this was asked for by Harris himself. If he was looking to break away from the Steelers and get a fresh start with a new team, he probably wasn’t thinking it would be on a team with one of the top rookie running backs in the fold.
