Home-run threat RB may push for starting job in Dallas by midseason.
For late-round draft picks who join a team able to offer them meaningful reps, they’ve landed in an ideal scenario. That’s why the uncertainty surrounding the Dallas Cowboys’ backfield is a blessing in disguise for rookie running back Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round selection with a great scenario in front of him.
NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter believes the Cowboys may have uncovered a potential midseason starter with the rookie back out of Texas; as well as a potential long-term option. While the team is expected to open the season with veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders sharing the workload, Blue’s upside could force the coaching staff’s hand sooner rather than later.
The Cowboys might begin the year with starting reps going to veteran backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, but Blue should have a chance to be the guy for the Blue-and-Silver by midseason. The Texas product’s home run-hitting ability as a runner and receiver makes it imperative that he’s on the field.
Drafted No. 149 overall, Blue brings explosive playmaking ability both as a runner and a pass-catcher. His agility, open-field vision, and top-end speed make him a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Those are traits the Cowboys could desperately use.
In an offense in transition, and with the team looking to re-establish balance on offense, Blue’s dynamic skill set could make him more than just a change-of-pace option. If he adapts to the pro level quickly, and shows consistency in pass protection, he could become a key figure in the backfield rotation and potentially much more.
Blue finished his career with the Longhorns rushing for 1,161 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 56 receptions for 503 yards and seven scores through the air. Dallas concluded the 2024 season ranked 27th in rush offense and will hope its new-look backfield can help spark an offense that saw a significant decline in yards and points scored last season.
