5 Things to know about Colts’ LB Hunter Wohler

Here are five things to know about Hunter Wohler, the Indianapolis Colts’ final pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

In the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Hunter Wohler out of Wisconsin.

The addition of Wohler can provide a boost at two position groups of need for the Colts.

Here are five things to know about Wohler, the Colts’ final pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Another safety being moved to linebacker

Wohler was a safety at Wisconsin, but when the Colts drafted him, he was listed as a linebacker. This is a position change that we’ve seen the Colts facilitate before, including last season with Jaylon Carlies, who played safety at Missouri.

While Wohler handled some free safety duties at Wisconsin, the bulk of his snaps came near the line of scrimmage, most of which were as a box defender, but he also lined up at the slot and along the defensive line occasionally as well.

Wohler has been a sound tackler throughout his career and a reliable run defender. His coverage abilities from the safety position, are one of the question marks around him as he enters the NFL, but bringing that skill set to linebacker could actually provide a coverage boost there, and that’s going to be important in Lou Anarumo’s defense.

Wohler may be listed as a linebacker but his versatility will be utilized

With all that said, while Wohler is on the Colts’ roster as a linebacker, it sounds like there are going to be some safety duties for him as well. As area scout Tyler Hughes said, Wohler has the frame to play linebacker, free safety, and strong safety.

Both the linebacker and safety positions are areas where depth is needed for the Colts, and Wohler can help provide that. But a potential early role that he could carve out is as a dime linebacker. Under Lou Anarumo, we are going to see more dime usage–with six defensive backs on the field–and to enhance the coverage ability of the second level during that personnel usage, Wohler could see some snaps during those obvious passing situations.

“It’s been a matchup league and certainly if the offense puts out a certain personnel group you want to be able to match it with what they’re doing,” Anarumo said on Wednesday. “Especially on third down, you want to get cover guys covering receivers. Nowadays, tight ends, the days to me of putting linebackers on tight ends is not ideal for the defense.”

However, what the Colts have to be mindful of is not putting too much on this plate early on.

Special teams help

This isn’t to say that Wohler is going to be Grant Stuard on Day 1 when it comes to special teams contributions. For three seasons, Stuard was a core teams contributor for the Colts, which included playing on five of the six different phases.

But with Stuard now in Detroit, those snaps have to be replaced, and Wohler is a prime candidate to do so. He played 452 snaps on teams, most of which came over three seasons, and at various points, he’s contributed on every unit except for the field goal block unit.

What did the Colts like about Wohler?

Tyler Hughes, area scout: “With Hunter, the versatility was the key thing, especially later in the draft,” said Hughes via the Indy Star. “He’s played a lot of down linebacker, he’s played strong safety, he’s played free safety, he was the punt returner this year, which shows that he’s a reliable dude and coaches trust him. Super smart. He’s going to be a great special teams player for us.

“With how much sub-package we’re in, in the NFL nowadays, that dime linebacker role is nice for him, but that’s not going to limit him to play strong safety or free safety. He has the frame to play all of them.”
