Former Saints QB Derek Carr issues statement on retiring from the NFL

Derek Carr’s decision on 2025 is a stunner. He isn’t getting surgery on his injured throwing shoulder. He isn’t going to play through it to hold onto his starting job. He isn’t requesting a trade from the New Orleans Saints, either. Carr is stepping away from the game after 11 years and calling it a career. He’s retiring, and the Saints will be going in a new direction at quarterback.

Carr issued a statement on his retirement through the team website: “Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League. For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”Ultimately, he played just two years of the four-year, $150 million he signed with the Saints back in 2023. But Carr dealt with a lot of injuries in his Saints tenure between concussions, an injured non-throwing hand, and this career-ending shoulder injury. He’s doing what’s best for his health and his family. Good luck to him in what’s next.
