Jake Brown breaks out as LSU baseball crushes Arkansas

LSU baseball outfielder Jake Brown has all the tools. He’s 6-foot-2, drives the ball, hits for contact, has a cannon for an arm, and can even run a little.

Brown flashed the talent as a true freshman in 2024, but was penciled in as a breakout star in 2025. The Sulphur, Louisiana native ranked No. 54 on D1Baseball’s preseason top sophomores list.

Brown has produced this year, but entering LSU’s series vs. Arkansas, Brown had just one hit since April 20.

On Saturday, in LSU’s 13-3 win over Arkansas, Brown’s luck flipped. Brown stroked two homers, matching his home run total on the year in one night. Brown totaled nine bases and drove in five runs, both career highs.

“He’s a really good athlete. He’s become a more skilled player and hitter every day here for two years and was ready to roll,” LSU head coach Jay Johnson said.

Brown, despite the ups and downs at LSU, remains steady.

“I try to approach every game the same way,” Brown said, “I was just able to get some good swings off today. I fee like whatever the at-bats, the success of the at-bats, I try not to take that into the next one, whether that’s the level of focus, just trying to keep and carry that every game, every at-bat.”

Brown and the offense knew how critical this series was after the Tigers struggled to score runs at Texas A&M last weekend. Brown said LSU had an added focus.

“It’s knowing that we’re a really good team, we have a really good offense, and it was never that far away. I think in a lot of the games that we’ve played, there have been times where we left some guys on base,” Brown said.

After clubbing two homers, Brown showcased the situational hitting LSU had been looking for later in the game. Johnson was just as impressed with Brown’s RBI single as he was with the long balls.

“The best hitters always get one RBU when there’s one RBI to get. After getting those two home run swings, to just stay on the ball and hit it up the middle,” Johnson said.

LSU’s offense has the potential to be one of the best lineups in the country, but it hasn’t always looked the part vs. SEC-level pitching this season. Brown is entering the latter stage of his sophomore campaign, a time where players often have the chance to emerge.

If Brown can keep swinging the bat like he did on Saturday, LSU’s lineup may find a spark.

When is LSU baseball vs. Arkansas game three?

After Brown’s big Saturday night performance, LSU has the chance for a sweep on Sunday. LSU will return to action at 3:00 PM CT. The game will be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network.
