Will Commanders and Terry McLaurin soon agree to an extension?

Terry McLaurin is coming off the best season of his six-year NFL career. Things couldn’t be any better for McLaurin. In addition to catching 13 regular-season touchdowns, he caught three more in the playoffs and helped lead the Washington Commanders to the NFC championship game. Off the field, McLaurin married his longtime girlfriend, Caitlin, in February.

So, what’s next for McLaurin? He could be in line for a brand new contract extension, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid receivers. In June 2022, McLaurin signed a three-year extension worth up to $70 million. He received that extension before training camp of the final year of his rookie deal.

McLaurin is about to head into the final year of the extension he signed in 2022. The Commanders want to keep McLaurin. Not only is he an elite wide receiver, but he also embodies everything general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn want. McLaurin is an A+ teammate, unselfish to a fault, a leader, gracious with the fans and community and always says the right things, regardless of what has happened around him. He’s never complained about Washington’s assortment of quarterbacks, a lack of touches, or the constant losing before 2024.

Ben Standig of The Athletic recently caught up with McLaurin on his “Last Man Standig” podcast, and McLaurin offered what sounded like a positive update.

“Yeah, we’re working on it,” McLaurin told Standig. “That’s the best thing I can say is we’re working on it.

Standig then asked McLaurin: Do you feel confident, similar to last time, it will get done? “Yeah,” McLaurin responded. Will McLaurin miss any time to ensure that an extension gets done? “We’ll see,” he replied.

Washington got a deal done with McLaurin in late June three years ago. That was a different regime, though. Last year, the Commanders struck a deal with right guard Sam Cosmi in September, just before the season began. So, if we go by those baselines, Washington and McLaurin will likely have something done before the season.

Obviously, the Commanders would prefer to close a deal much sooner. Washington needs McLaurin on the field in training camp—not because he needs the work, but because he’s such an important leader.
