Packers meet with WR Jayden Reed to clarify role after 2025 draft

The Green Bay Packers met with representation of receiver Jayden Reed to clarify the player’s long-term role after the team drafted a pair of wide receivers in the top 100 picks of the 2025 NFL draft, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst met with Reed’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and per Schefter, the Packers told Rosenhaus that Reed is still considered the team’s “top receiver” after spending a first-round pick on Matthew Golden and a third-round pick on Savion Williams.

Reed, a second-round pick in 2023, led the Packers in receiving yards as both a rookie in 2023 and a second-year player in 2024. He produced a career-high 1,020 total yards and scored seven touchdowns over 17 games last season.

After a disappointing end to the 2024 season in the passing game, the Packers remade the receiver position during the draft, picking Golden, a speedster from Texas, on Day 1 before taking Williams, a do-everything weapon from TCU, on Day 2.

While mostly a slot receiver, Reed has also been a gadget-type weapon for Matt LaFleur and the Packers during his first two seasons, handling 31 total rushing attempts. Golden can play any of the traditional receiver spots, and Williams arrives in Green Bay with legitimate gadget potential.

Either Reed and his team wanted clarification on where he stands going into his third season, or the Packers wanted to be proactive and provide security to the player after a pair of big draft moves. With Rosenhaus now in involved, it’s safe to assume Reed’s reps wanted to know how the addition of two top-100 draft picks would hurt the player’s ability to produce big numbers and earn a big deal in the near future.

Reed might also be looking at a drop in targets — going from 94 as a rookie to only 75 in 2024 — and the arrival of two draft picks as a real threat to his role in Green Bay.

But the addition of Golden and Williams likely had far less to do with Reed and far more to do with the futures of Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, two picks from the 2022 draft who are entering contract years with big question marks. Watson is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered in January, while Doubs suffered two concussions and had a discipline-related one-game suspension in 2024. The Packers’ stability at receiver got wobbly to end last season, and Gutekunst aggressively added short-term and long-term stabilizers via the draft, as any good roster builder would.

Reed is in a tough spot. He plays a specific role — as a zone-busting slot receiver — in an offense with a high-volume, Pro Bowl running back and a lot of mouths to feed in the passing game. Two new, talented receivers just got added to the mix. In so many ways, the 2025 season looks like a fork in the road for the Packers at receiver, and Reed is probably fair to wonder which side his ride is leaning after a tumultuous end to last season and now a busy offseason.
