USC did not get any bang for its buck with Lincoln Riley in 2023
On Thursday, USA TODAY Sports was, as requested, able to obtain USC’s 2023 federal tax returns. The report detailed head football coach Lincoln Riley’s total compensation during during that time, which was revealed to be $11.5 million.
Of that amount, just over $10.2 million was classified as base salary. It also reported $100,000 in bonuses and incentives, as well as nearly $1.15 million in what the tax form referred to as “other reportable compensation”. In addition, Riley has the benefit of a housing loan with a balance due of $3.43 million.
As a reminder, USC went 8-5 during the 2023 season. This means that Riley was paid nearly $1.5 million per victory that year. Given how much of the university’s money he is receiving, it is totally valid for USC fans to expect much better results from their head coach.
National college football reporter Stewart Mandel of The Athletic certainly took note of this. Following the release of the report, Mandel wrote on social media, “Being a private school has helped shield USC from the fact this has clearly surpassed A&M/Jimbo Fisher as the most lopsided coach contract ever written.”
Fortunately for USC fans, the Trojans are finally beginning to recruit the way that they were expected to when Riley was hired. The fan base is hoping that Riley can turn those recruiting wins into victories on the field and finally prove that he is worth the massive financial investment that USC has made in him.
