Is Auburn still slated to host a regional despite dropping its final series at Ole Miss?
Auburn baseball may have dropped its final conference series at Ole Miss over the weekend, but it is still in a great spot to host a regional, according to the latest projections from D1Baseball ahead of this week’s SEC Tournament in Hoover.
In its projections released Sunday, Auburn is set to take the No. 6 overall seed in the upcoming NCAA Baseball Tournament, which puts them in a position to host both a regional and super regional. According to the outlook, Auburn would host Duke, Troy, and Long Island as part of the Auburn regional. Should Auburn take the crown, they would host the winner of the Tallahassee regional hosted by Florida State in the Super Regionals.
Auburn is in a great place to host due to its strong RPI ranking. The Tigers begin the week at No. 2 in the RPI, behind SEC rival Georgia. Auburn has the nation’s strongest schedule and has performed well against the top teams on its docket. Auburn is 15-12 against quad-1 competition, and is one of three programs to hold at least 15 wins over teams from that fit that mold. Every team projected to compete in the Auburn regional has a losing record against quad-1 teams, while Auburn posts a 5-1 record against quad-2 teams (Duke and Troy) and is 11-3 against quad-4 teams (Long Island).
Auburn grabbed the No. 6 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament, earning a first-round bye. They will meet the winner of the Texas A&M-Mississippi State contest on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT at the Hoover Met. Auburn owns a series win over Mississippi State, which counts toward its quad-2 ranking as the Bulldogs begin the week at No. 30. Texas A&M, which Auburn did not meet in the regular season, is No. 55 in the RPI.
