A WNBA rookie nearly lost it describing the support she received from her team following the death of her mother.
Connecticut Sun player Saniya Rivers made her WNBA debut on Tuesday during a matchup with the Las Vegas Aces. Rivers played very well, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block. Postgame, while stifling tears, she attributed it to the support she received from her organization.”They’ve done so much for me on and off the court,” Rivers said with a quiver in her voice.
“I wasn’t with them for like two weeks, and Tina [Charles] alone, checking in on me every day ― It’s just amazing, she didn’t have to … You know, you hear stories about other teams, and you just don’t know how it’s gonna be with a rookie and a vet.”
Rivers effusively praised Charles for playing a big sister role to her, and also thanked the Sun for their support, too, while revealing how hard it was to play just weeks after the unfortunate passing of her mom. “Rachid [Meziane], the coaching staff ― They’ve been so consistent and understanding and loving, and you’ll never need another staff as compassionate,” she explained. “My mom got the opportunity to meet the staff and the team before she passed, and I think she was able to rest because she knew I was in good hands.”Here’s the full video of her heartfelt words. Grab the tissues.
What a brave decision for Saniya Rivers to reveal her feelings. Sending love and light to Rivers and the Connecticut Sun organization.
