The NFC South has been one of the NFL’s most unpredictable divisions in recent years, and the quarterback play is a major reason why. With a mix of promising young talent, veteran presence, and uncertain upside, the QB rooms in this division are fascinating. Here’s a team-by-team breakdown of each quarterback depth chart and how they stack up against each other
Depth Chart: Baker Mayfield, Kyle Trask, and Michael Pratt
Baker Mayfield’s career resurgence in Tampa Bay earned him a new deal, and he’s proven he can win games, lead a locker room, and deliver in high-pressure moments. He’s a legitimate gunslinger who fits the Bucs’ aggressive style under new playcaller Josh Grizzard. Kyle Trask provides stability as a backup who’s familiar with the system, and Michael Pratt is a raw but talented passer the team is high on.
Depth Chart: Michael Penix Jr., Kirk Cousins, and Easton Stick
Fresh off a torn Achilles, Kirk Cousins was a huge free-agent splash and brought instant upside to the Falcons’ offense. The surprise drafting of Michael Penix Jr. in the first round added long-term intrigue but also raises questions about roster dynamics. That is, until Cousins was benched for Penix with a handful of games left in the season, and he impressed immediately. Penix has a strong arm and great placement, but his injury history remains a question mark. Easton Stick hadn’t had a ton of opportunity but has shown some flashes and is solid depth.
Depth Chart: Bryce Young, Andy Dalton, and Jack Plummer
Bryce Young started off slow in his career, and there were worries that he might not live up to his potential, but at the end of last season, Young caught fire, finding his rhythm with his passes, playing more confidently, and showing what the Panthers saw in him out of Alabama. With his new number one target, Tetairoa McMillan, Young will look to build off a strong ending to 2024 and take the next step. Andy Dalton is a veteran who can step in if needed, but he’s well past his prime.
Depth Chart: Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener
With Derek Carr suddenly retiring, the Saints’ quarterback room is largely unproven. Expected to lead the pack is 2025 Draft 40th overall Tyler Shough, who will be a whopping 26 years old in September, who, while showing flashes on film, had a lengthy injury history and struggles under pressure. Behind him are two young but wildly unproven quarterbacks. Rattler had every opportunity to solidify himself as the quarterback of the future, with Carr injured, but he failed to do so with inconsistent play. Haener was always a project, but may be more than originally anticipated
