This isn’t how it was supposed to work.

Houston hadn’t been a “power” conference football program since the Southwest Conference was a thing – Michael Jordan was a baseball player then.

There were some lean times as part of Conference USA and the AAC, but Houston was all poised and ready to be a player as it made the move up to the Power Five – now Four – level and the Big 12.

The Cougars have gone 4-8 in their first two Big 12 years, and failed to go to a bowl in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the end of the Dana Dimel era in 2001 and 2002.

Last year was a true rebuild under now-second-year head man Willie Fritz. The offense was the second-worst in the nation – it failed to score more than 18 points in nine games, and failed to get to double-digit points four times – but there were glimmers of hope.

Houston screwed up Kansas State, killed Utah’s bowl chances, and stunned TCU on the road. And now there’s real hope for a boost to look and play the Big 12 part.

Fritz is a terrific coach, the staff hit the transfer portal hard for several upgrades, and now there’s depth, talent, and a schedule that should be manageable enough for a two-win improvement and a bowl game. But first, there has to be a night-and-day improvement from …
