Pat Boen retiring as Stonehill College baseball coach

On Monday, Stonehill College announced that Pat Boen was retiring as coach of the baseball team.

Boen, a 1989 Stonehill graduate, coached the Skyhawks for 28 years and spearheaded a recent transition to Division I. Boen compiled a record of 666-588-4, which is the most wins and games coached in program history.

“Pat is synonymous with Stonehill, and we are fortunate to have had his leadership as he guided our baseball program to new heights, and he leaves behind a rock-solid foundation that will allow Stonehill baseball to continue to do great things in the future,” said Stonehill athletic director Dean O’Keefe in a press release. “We are grateful for all Pat has done for Stonehill, and wish him the very best”

Boen took over the helms in 1998 when the Skyhawks were still a Division II program. The Brockton native led Stonehill to three NCAA Tournament trips and three Northeast-10 Conference titles.

Boen’s team collected at least 20 wins in 20 seasons, including this spring when the Skyhawks finished 20-32.

In 2000 and 2015, the Skyhawks finished with a program-record 34 wins.

“Coaching at my alma mater for the past 28 years has been one of the greatest blessings of my life,” said Boen, who coached two MLB Draft selections. “Stonehill is home, and the relationships I’ve built with our student-athletes and their families have meant the world to me. I’ll always be grateful for the memories, the support, and incredible people who have made this journey so special.”

Boen was inducted in the Stonehill Hall of Fame in 2007. During his collegiate career in addition to playing baseball, the shortstop was also the starting point guard for the men’s basketball in 1989 when the Skyhawks won the Northeast-10 championship.

Boen is also a Brockton High Hall of Gamer and helped the Boxers win the state championship in basketball in 1985.

Although his coaching days are over, Boen will work as a philanthropy officer in the college’s office of advancement.

Associate head coach Sean Callahan will serve as the team’s interim head coach as Stonehill conducts a nationwide search for its next coach.
