Saints rehab director Jonathan Gress joining Oklahoma Sooners

Saints rehab director Jonathan Gress joining Oklahoma Sooners

Change could be good for injury-plagued Saints

Here’s another offseason departure for the New Orleans Saints. Jonathan Gress is leaving the team for an opportunity with the Oklahoma Sooners to become their head football trainer, per Sooner Scoop’s George Stoia. Gress joined the Saints in 2018 as an assistant athletic trainer and was promoted the next year to director of rehabilitation, a position he held until this year.

Gress is a Norman, Okla. native and earned his master’s degree at OU back in 2008, so this is a homecoming for him. The Saints have had turnover in the training staff this offseason with Ted Rath replacing Matt Rhea as their sports performance director, among other changes, so Gress moving on is just one more change they’ll need to account for.

Hopefully a new name filling that role makes a difference. The Saints have dealt with a ton of injuries in recent years, so this is as much an opportunity for them to try something new as it is for Gress to move somewhere he’s more comfortable. We’ll keep an eye out for news on his replacement.
