Red Sox’s Parting Message to Rafael Devers Is Turning Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Boston Red Sox set the baseball world ablaze on Sunday after trading designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. In return, the Red Sox landed right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, outfielder James Tibbs and right-handed pitcher Jose Bello.
The move came as a surprise not only because Boston has been one of the hottest teams in baseball, going 8-2 in their last 10 games, but also because Devers was the Red Sox’s longest-tenured player and led the team in home runs this season with 14.
In fact, the 28-year-old homered just hours before being traded, helping secure Boston’s 2-0 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday.
After the trade, the Red Sox took to social media to deliver a parting message to Devers.
“Forever a Red Sox champion,” the team wrote while posting a video. “Thank you for every homer, smile, and Raffy moment.”

The post caught a lot of attention on social media, as Red Sox fans were still distraught over the team trading a three-time MLB All-Star and the last remaining player from the 2018 World Series team.
“Why did y’all do this,” a fan said.
“Are you trolling? Lol,” another wrote.
“Genuinely could’ve waited for this one,” added another.
“ADMIN STOP,” said a fan.
“Only 30 second video?” wrote one.
“LEAVE ME ALONE,” said another.
Devers was signed by the Red Sox in 2013 as a 16-year-old free agent. He didn’t make his MLB debut until 2017, but since then, he’s been a pivotal part of the Boston organization.
In nine years with the Red Sox, he recorded 1,135 hits, 214 home runs and holds a career batting average of .279.
