Warriors trade up for Florida guard Will Richard

After trading back and landing the No. 52 overall pick and the No. 59 overall pick in Thursday’s second round of the NBA draft, the Golden State Warriors selected Alex Toohey out of Australia with the No. 52 pick. Before hitting the clock at No. 59, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Steve Kerr made another trade, this time a move up the board.

The Warriors traded up three spots with the Memphis Grizzlies to get back on the clock at the No. 56 pick. With the No. 56 pick, the Warriors selected Florida guard Will Richard in the second round on Thursday night.

To move up three spots to take Richard, the Warriors traded the No. 59 overall pick, a future second-round pick and the rights to former second-round pick Justinian Jesssup. Jessup was drafted by the Warriors in 2020, but has yet to play in the NBA.

Coming off a national championship run with the Florida Gators, Richard averaged 13.3 points on 48.7% shooting from the field to go along with 35.6% from beyond the arc. Richard added 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 40 games for the Gators.

Richard was a big piece to Florida’s win in the national championship over Houston, tallying 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with eight boards, two assists and two steals in 33 minutes.
