Yankees JC Escarra takes grounders at third base
With DJ LeMahieu’s release, the Yankees might require some additional infield versatility, so catcher-first baseman JC Escarra is taking grounders at third base, alongside Jorbit Vivas, who was just recalled from Triple-A. Escarra saw limited time at third base in the minors.
NEW YORK – No-hit by Seattle Mariners starter Bryan Woo through seven innings, the Yankees rallied to an extra-inning, 6-5 win on Thursday night.
With one out in the 10th, Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly to center narrowly scored Anthony Volpe from third base – a play that survived a Mariners’ replay challenge.
That only slightly delayed the Yankees’ on-field celebration, winning their fourth straight game and sweeping three from the Mariners.
It was just the Yankees’ second extra-inning win this season in eight tries, with the victory going to Devin Williams, who pitched an efficient 10th, stranding the automatic runner at second base.
Overcoming a 5-0 deficit, the Yanks scored three runs in the eighth before Austin Wells’ two-out, two-run single tied it in the ninth against All-Star closer Andres Munoz.
After walking the first two Yankees he faced Thursday night, Woo retired 20 straight batters – starting with Cody Bellinger’s groundball double play grounder to end the first inning.
Leading off the home eighth, Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s ground single to right broke up Woo’s no-hit bid, and the right-hander exited with one out and a runner at first after yielding Wells’ sac fly.
Two batters later, pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton rocked a two-run homer off Matt Brash, cutting Seattle’s lead to 5-3.
In the ninth, Trent Grisham and Bellinger sandwiched singles between a Judge fly out.
After Chisholm flied out for the second out, Ben Rice walked on a full-count pitch and Wells rifled his game-tying single to right.
