Garrett Wilson extension: Is Sauce Gardner next?

The New York Jets have been negotiating contract extensions with their 2022 first-round picks this offseason. Both Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner became eligible to sign extensions this summer. Wilson inked his long-term deal on Monday, signing a historic four-year, $130 million contract extension that includes $90 million guaranteed on Monday.

With Wilson’s contract completed, Gardner will surely expect to sign his extension in short order.

The Jets took no liberties with Wilson’s contract. They made him the fifth-highest paid receiver in the NFL at $32.5 million per season. It’s the largest per-year contract in Jets history. Wilson also received the fourth-most guarantees of any wideout in the league right now.

General manager Darren Mougey must now treat Gardner in a similar fashion. The All-Pro cornerback will expect a historic payday within the context of cornerbacks. The Jets don’t have any remaining leverage, but that’s overrated anyway. They plan to pay Gardner handsomely.

Denzel Ward’s $100.5 million contract is currently the largest among cornerbacks. Derek Stingley Jr. earns the most per season at $30 million. Stingley Jr. got nearly $90 million in guarantees. Gardner could become the highest-paid CB in NFL history by surpassing $30 million per year.

With Wilson’s extension now official, Gardner could sign his before the Jets report to training camp next week.
