Giants training camp preview: Tight ends

The New York Giants will open their 2025 training camp in less than a week, and we’re previewing each unit as the days unwind.

Today, we go back to the offensive side of the ball — the tight end room.

Here’s a quick rundown of the players, coaches, and expectations for 2025.

Coaching staff

Mike Kafka (offensive coordinator), Tim Kelly (unit coach)

Kafka is entering his fourth season as the coordinator and will likely be empowered with more responsibility, such as play calling. Kelly is in his second year with Big Blue, coaching the tight ends. Kelly is a veteran coach and has been an offensive coordinator twice in his career (Houston and Tennessee).

Starter

Theo Johnson

The Giants believe they have a stud in the massive (6-foot-6, 265 pounds) second-year man out of Penn State. Johnson showed some ability to get into space and make plays as a rookie.

In 12 games last season, Johnson caught 29 of 43 targets for 331 yards with 16 first downs and a touchdown. His season ended in Week 12 when he suffered a Lisfranc fracture and was lost for the remainder of the year.

Johnson participated in the Giants’ offseason program and is expected to be ready for the upcoming season.

Others

Daniel Bellinger, Chris Manhertz, Thomas Fidone II (rookie), Greg Dulcich, Jermaine Terry II (rookie)

Bellinger is entering his fourth year with the Giants and has been a steady backup, appearing in all 34 games the past two seasons. Manhertz is a top blocker and can handle the ball when called upon in certain situations.

Dulcich is a longshot to stick, but is a talented player and will get a “look-see” this summer. Fidone was once a top prospect coming out of high school, but knee injuries knocked him off course. The Giants hope he can overcome the setbacks and become an NFL player.

Terry is an UDFA who could stick as a practice squad player this year.

Outlook

This unit is seen as a strength, especially if Johnson can fulfill his promise. They have plenty of depth, and both Belliger and Manhertz can catch and block, which means they can stay on the field all three downs and in 12 alignments. They could have a find in Fidone, though, which is a situation to watch.
