Jalen Ramsey is exactly what the Steelers needed on defense — a tough, versatile chess piece that can move throughout the secondary, creating havoc along the way. And no one is more excited than Steelers HC Mike Tomlin.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Tomlin offered high-praise for Ramsey and what he brings to the Steelers’ defense — pointing to traits in his game that have been evident since his draft process.
“[Ramsey’s] a football player first, and a positional player second,” Tomlin said. “When he came out in the draft, I think he was the number one safety on our board, as well as the number one corner on our board. And I think that speaks to his versatility. His tape has done nothing but solidify that perspective that we had on him since he’s been in the league.
“Over the course of his career, you’ve seen him do a variety of things: play inside and play out. All the components of the game — man-to-man coverage, run support — he has an appetite for it all.”
What Tomlin described is a total-package defensive back — as Ramsey is a fierce competitor who excels against the run just as well as he does the pass.
The three-time All-Pro corner will likely play a massive role for Pittsburgh’s defense this upcoming season — but acquiring him and Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith cost the Steelers their star FS Minkah Fitzpatrick, who’s already turning heads at Dolphins training camp.
