We paid now, so let’s go play football

The Buffalo Bills signed James Cook to a $48M 4-year extension Wednesday morning, with $30M in guaranteed money.Bills fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief, as the RB1 put pen to paper on the new deal, bringing an emotional conclusion to a hold-in and negotiating period that began earlier this year following the end of the 2024 postseason. He teared up as he signed his name to remain a Bill.

“We paid now, so let’s go play football,” he said to he press not long after the ink dried. He also clarified the reasoning behind his hold-in, saying, “It was not more so it would help. Just trying to protect myself. Just trying to stay healthy and just get everything done before I can go out there and play with a clear mindset and just be locked in.”GM Brandon Beane took the press conference podium directly from Cook’s contract signing to talk about what it means for the club moving forward.

“This is the new young core that we’re putting our money into,” Beane said. “We want to draft, develop, and re-sign. This is another draft pick we’re proud of, and we’re excited to get extended. He’s got a skillset we want to maintain in this offense. There was never a case of not wanting to extend him.”

Beane successfully completed extensions for multiple players early in the offseason, though early on, Cook and his agents, Zac Hiller and Matt Leist of LAA, weren’t reportedly yet “on the same page” with Beane and the team to get a deal done, though both sides continuously expressed the desire to keep the starter in Buffalo.

“Once we got him back on the practice field, we really worked hard [on Tuesday],” Beane added. “I think it was roughly 11 o’clock or so last night, where we were able to say both sides were good with this.”Beane and the Bills’ side were happy to reach a resolution, as were Cook and his reps.”James could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill,” Hiller said once the deal was complete. “We are extremely thankful to the entire Bills organization and glad we could make that happen.Cook will be making $12M a year, which shows good faith from his side in that he had been publicly asking for $15M AVV via social media.Beane and company selected Cook in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft in the hope he would provide them with the receiving dual-threat starting running back they had been seeking for several seasons at the time.Cook’s done just that. What’s more, he’s been the second-best offensive player on the team after QB Josh Allen over the last couple of seasons. Similar to Allen, who just won league MVP honors, the 25-year-old has thrived playing behind one of the best blocking offenses in football.second-bestCook’s gone for 1,000+ yards each of the past two seasons, co-leading the NFL last season with 16 rushing touchdowns, which also tied a franchise mark (O.J. Simpson). He also finished with 18 total TDs and earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.Cook has formed one of the best backfield threats with Allen during that time, as well as one of the best running back rotations in the league with Ray Davis and Ty Johnson. He’s also been an ideal fit in Joe Brady’s offense, in which success is achieved through efficiency in making the most of opportunities shared and distribution spread across the passing and running game (Cook played on only 48% of snaps last season). He projects to see an increase in his workload following the extension, though it figures to remain balanced with the offense and the team’s other weapons.“We also want to use our other weapons and keep him as fresh as possible,” Beane said Wednesday. “We think that’s the best utilization of him, and we just look at, I know he gets put in the running back room or guys get put in a tight end room, but it’s just trying to find a variety of weapons and skill sets and he’s got a skill set that we wanted to maintain and keep with this offense.

Like anything, it’s that fine balance. Some of it is not him wanting out; it’s us throwing as many different pieces and looks for the defense while also keeping him fresh.”Having been extended beyond his rookie contract for the next four seasons through 2029, he’s also making good on the team’s hope when they first brought him to Buffalo that he would be their RB1 of the future. And the future is now.
