Taylor Swift, a world-renowned pop star, is a woman who needs no introduction to almost anyone in the world. Travis Kelce — a future NFL Hall of Famer, 3-time Super Bowl champion and 4-time first-team All-Pro tight end with the Kansas City Chiefs — wasn’t even a blip on her radar … that is, until the summer of 2023.
Now, with 10 days remaining until the Chiefs’ season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers and 38 days ahead of the debut of Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” the pair have announced their engagement.

For plenty of fans, it was dubbed an unlikely pairing; how does one of the most accomplished lyricists in her generation match up with an athlete from Cleveland Heights who tweets about squirrels eating bread? Regardless, the two continued to blend their lives in the most unexpected ways: Travis Kelce took the stage at the Eras Tour, while Taylor Swift learned Cover 2 defenses and her fans purchased Kelce jerseys in droves.
Here’s a look at the evolution of the relationship between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, with all of the major NFL milestones hit in between.
‘Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it’
It all started with a friendship bracelet, a special tradition that originated among “Swifties.” The bracelets became a connection point among the fan base ahead of the Eras Tour, where fans would create and trade beaded bracelets with each other.

In the summer of 2023, Kelce attended Swift’s concert at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City — home to, of course, the Kansas City Chiefs. Kelce wasn’t on Swift’s radar, but Swift was clearly on Kelce’s. He took to his “New Heights” podcast, co-hosted with his brother and former NFL center, Jason Kelce, to express his disappointment that a friendship bracelet he made with his phone number on it never made it to Swift.
“If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there. But I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it,” Kelce shared. “She doesn’t meet people, or at least, she didn’t wanna meet me. I took it personal.” Ah well.
It seemed as though that would likely be the end of it … until it wasn’t.
‘Baby, let the games begin’
After Kelce’s shoutout to Swift on the podcast, rumors began to circulate that the two were spending time together, but no confirmed reports of a relationship between them had emerged yet; it was all just unconfirmed conjecture.

Where that conjecture began to take a turn toward confirmation of their relationship was her first appearance at an NFL game, joining Kelce’s mom, Donna, in his Arrowhead suite for 2023’s Week 3 matchup against the Chicago Bears. It didn’t take long for the cameras to spot her, and from then on, she became a frequent fixture at Chiefs games, cheering on her boyfriend and his team as if she weren’t one of the biggest celebrities in the world.
In Swift’s recent appearance on “New Heights,” Kelce and Swift recounted the experience of her first NFL game.
“You wanna talk about green flags? The first game she went to, the Bears game, she literally went through the front door of the stadium,” Kelce said in the episode.

“Yeah, we walked right in,” Swift added, as the Kelce brothers both looked incredulous. “If this is where we walk in, this is where we walk in.”
So there she was, walking into Arrowhead Stadium, using the entrance that most NFL fans use, albeit surrounded by some of Kelce’s tallest friends for shelter because, you know, she’s Taylor Swift.
‘You’re taking shots at me like it’s Patrón’
There was no doubt that Swift’s presence was doing wonders for the NFL world. Some of Swift’s fans were watching professional football for the first time, curious to get a look at Kelce and learn about the new world she was in. Kelce’s jersey sales suddenly spiked 400% and the Chiefs’ broadcast ratings were up.

Swift’s newfound presence at the games wasn’t without critics, however; plenty of NFL fans voiced displeasure regarding her occasional appearances on Chiefs broadcasts. Even Kelce noted that the league was going overboard with its frequent pans to show Swift in his suite in October 2023.
“I think it’s fun when they show who’s at the game,” Travis said during an episode of “New Heights.” “I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you’re watching. But at the same time, they’re overdoing it a little bit.”
Whether the league was really overdoing it, it didn’t matter to Swift, who continued to reiterate her intentions to attend NFL games.
“I’m just there to support Travis,” she said. “I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”

‘Where’s the trophy? / He just comes running over to me’
Kansas City finished the 2023 season with an 11-6 record and a wild-card berth in the playoffs, while Kelce finished the year with a 93 receptions, 984 yards and 5 touchdowns as he, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a dominant defense led by DT Chris Jones found their way to Super Bowl LVIII, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 for the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl victory.
In celebration of the win, where Kelce caught nine of his 10 targets for a team-high 93 receiving yards, Swift took the field at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, soon covered in red and yellow confetti to celebrate the win, bringing him in for what soon became an iconic embrace.

Swift memorialized the moment in a song, “The Alchemy,” on her album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” recounting the moment she took the field to celebrate Kelce’s third Super Bowl win:
Shirts off, and your friends lift you up over their heads
Beer sticking to the floor
Cheers chanted, cause they said
There was no chance, trying to be
The greatest in the league
Where’s the trophy?
He just comes running over to me

‘It’s you and me, that’s my whole world’
Once Swift and Kelce hard-launched their relationship, it didn’t take long before the two very different worlds they were living in collided — no matter how unlikely the pairing once seemed.
Swift, a 14-time Grammy Award winner, adopted the life of an NFL fan. She wasn’t just attending the games; she was learning the game.
“I am forever thankful for you diving into the football world wholeheartedly,” Kelce said to Swift during her “New Heights” appearance.
“Oh my god, I fell in love with it. I became obsessed with it,” she said. “I became, like, a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, ‘We drafted Xavier Worthy!’ And my friends are like, ‘What is — who body snatched you? What do you mean we drafted Xavier Worthy?’ We’re talking about Cover 2, Cover 4, Cover 0, man coverage.”

And just as Swift learned about Kelce’s world, he learned about hers, attending The Eras Tour concerts around the world, eventually making a surprise debut alongside her on stage in London as a backup dancer. Fans in the crowd abruptly applauded in delight as he acted through a brief silent skit leading up to her performance of “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.”
‘Think I know where you belong / Think I know it’s with me’
The relationship between Swift and Kelce has continued to evolve over their two years together, and now, just ahead of the 2025 NFL season kickoff, Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram.

Swift posted the news, tagging Travis and sharing several photos with the fitting caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨.”
Kelce, with Swift by his side, is entering his 13th NFL season — coincidentally, Taylor’s favorite number — preparing for what could be his final year in the league. There’s no doubt that he’ll continue to be a presence in the media regardless of his standing on the NFL’s hottest team, holding a league-high .776 win percentage since Mahomes took over as a starter back in 2018 — as long as he’s alongside Swift, friendship bracelets and all.
