NFL waiver order: Commanders near the bottom

The Washington Commanders trimmed their roster from 90 players to 53 on Tuesday. The roster cuts featured very few surprises. Next up for Washington and the 31 other NFL teams is to assemble their 16-man practice squads.

While teams scramble to sign their practice squads, there are also waiver claims. The deadline to place a claim on a player waived on Tuesday is at Noon ET on Wednesday. One hour later, waiver claims are awarded.

Things look different from a waiver perspective this year for Washington. Last year, Washington held the No. 2 spot in the waiver order as a result of a terrible 2023 season. The Commanders went 12-5 last season, appearing in the NFC championship game, and now are near the bottom of the waiver order.

Here’s a look at the complete waiver order following cutdown day. It follows the original 2025 NFL draft order.

Where are the Commanders in the waiver order?

The Commanders are currently 29th in the waiver order. They will remain in that spot through the first three weeks of the 2025 season. Then, the waiver wire order revert’s to the current NFL standings.

When is the waiver claim deadline?

The waiver claim deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Noon ET.  All waiver claims will be revealed one hour later.

NFL waiver rules

Teams are allowed to place claims on players who are waived — not released. There is a clear distinction between the two. A player is subject to NFL waivers if he has less than four accrued seasons in the league. To earn an accrued season, a player must be on a team’s roster (active roster, inactive list, Reserve/Injured list, and PUP list) for at least six games. Being on the practice squad does not count toward accrued seasons.
