In an unexpected turn of events, Katy Perry has announced her departure from the popular US reality series American Idol. Perry, a renowned singer-songwriter, has been an integral part of the show’s judging panel since its revival on ABC in 2018.
During her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Perry, aged 39, revealed her decision to step down from her role as a judge on the televised singing competition. When questioned by host Jimmy Kimmel about her future on Idol, Perry expressed her deep connection to the show, stating, “I love Idol so much, it’s connected me with the heart of America. But I feel like I need to go out to feel that pulse of my own beat.”
Perry’s departure means bidding farewell to her fellow judges, musicians Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, both of whom also joined the panel in 2018. Perry indicated that her co-stars would be informed of her decision imminently, stating, “They’ll find out tonight.”
Despite her decision to leave, Perry emphasized her affection for American Idol and hinted at the possibility of returning in the future, saying, “I love the show so much but I want to see the world. Maybe I’ll come back if they have me one day.”
While Perry’s departure marks the end of an era, fans can still catch her on the upcoming 22nd season of American Idol, set to premiere in the US on February 18th.
In June of last year, Bryan came to Perry’s defense amid criticism regarding her judgments on the show, asserting that the “I Kissed a Girl” sensation had faced unwarranted scrutiny. “We all understand,” Bryan remarked. “We’re critiquing young talents who have captured the hearts of viewers at home. As judges, we’re not infallible. We often find ourselves in challenging situations and become targets for criticism, especially on social media.”
He went on to express that he and his fellow judges are committed to doing their utmost. “We’re giving it our all,” he added.
Bryan also addressed the criticism Perry faced for her approach to the show, emphasizing the importance of spontaneity and humor in the television landscape. “Katy faces criticism for bringing excitement to the show,” he stated. “It’s crucial not to play it too safe and miss out on fun or comedic moments.”
Reflecting on Perry’s career, Bryan acknowledged the magnitude of the pressure she has endured. “It’s admirable how she has navigated such intense scrutiny throughout her career,” he remarked.
In March of last year, there was a bit of drama on the show when contestant Sara Beth Liebe decided to leave after some comments made by Katy Perry. Liebe, who is a 25-year-old mother of three, received a playful yet questionable response from Perry when she mentioned her kids during her audition. Perry jokingly pretended to faint, saying, “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m going to pass out.” Perry then quipped, “Honey, you been laying on the table too much.”
Later that year, both Perry and Lionel Richie were missing from an episode due to their involvement in King Charles III’s coronation concert. The show enlisted Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran as guest judges to fill in for them.
