Dondrea Tillman reacts to ‘leverage’ penalty vs. Colts

When Indianapolis Colts kicker Spencer Shrader missed a 60-yard field goal attempt on Sunday, it looked like the Denver Broncos had clinched a 28-26 victory on the road. Then officials threw a penalty flag.

Broncos outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman received a 15-yard “leverage” penalty after he placed his hand on an opponent while going up over the line. That put Shrader within range of a 45-yard field goal attempt, which he converted to give Indy a 29-28 win on the game’s final play.

After the game, Tillman was asked about that costly penalty.

“Coaches call the play, and we got a flag on it,” Tillman said. “I gotta go back and watch the film to see how I can learn from it. I’m trying to do everything I can to help this team out, so, you know, I just gotta be better.”

Tillman said he was aware of the rule and was just attempting to make a play. He had not seen a replay yet when he spoke to reporters after the game.

Tillman finished the game with three tackles. The rotational pass rusher will aim to bounce back when Denver goes on the road to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3.
