Patriots coach Mike Vrabel explains aggressive fourth-down playcalling

The playcalling for the New England Patriots was especially aggressive in Sunday’s 21-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. That includes the team going for it on multiple fourth downs, including once on their own 15-yard line.

The aggressive strategy worked, for the most part, with the team converting on 4-of-5 fourth-down attempts. One of the conversions kept a touchdown drive alive for the Patriots.

“I just want to be aggressive, want to be decisive and aggressive and give these guys opportunities to win the game,” Vrabel told media members, via Patriots Wire’s Sophie Weller. “Felt like those were good calls for us. The players executed it. We just weren’t able to score off of some of them.”

The Patriots don’t have a deep roster, and they might have to be aggressive throughout the season to have a shot at winning games. Vrabel trusts the players to step up in crucial moments, and he isn’t afraid to put it all on the line when the game calls for it.

If not for the five turnovers, Vrabel’s strategy probably would have paid off with a win for the Patriots. However, before the Patriots can win games, they must learn to stop beating themselves.
