College football fans knew that they were likely to see an instant classic between the No. 5 Oregon Ducks and No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions in a white-out at Beaver Stadium. I’m not sure fans had any idea that they were going to witness a game as thrilling as that one.
What was a 3-3 rock fight in the first half turned into a thrill 30-24 double-overtime win for Dan Lanning and the Ducks, sealed by an interception from safety Dillon Thieneman to give Oregon its biggest win on the road in years, and the biggest win of Lanning’s career.
After going up 17-3 in the second half, it appeared that Oregon might walk out of Happy Valley with a comfortable win, but the Nittany Lions weren’t going away that easily. Drew Allar led Penn State on a pair of touchdown drives late in the game, tieing it at 17-17 in the final minute to force overtime.
From there, the two traded touchdowns in OT, and despite Oregon missing their two-point conversion attempt in the second OT, the interception from Allar to Thieneman ended the game.
It was a celebration on the field, and all the way across the country in Eugene as the Ducks improved to 5-0 on the season, and undoubtedly set themselves up for another trip to the College Football Playoff and Big Ten Championship.
Unsurprisingly, Oregon fans went ballistic online, soaking in the moment. Here’s a look at how they celebrated throughout and after the contest.
