On Monday, the NHL suspended both Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid and Vancouver Canucks’ Tyler Myers for three games for cross-checking. Both incidents occurred on Saturday night, with McDavid targeting Conor Garland while Myers went after Evan Bouchard. The good news is that neither Garland nor Bouchard suffered injuries despite the violent cross-checks that did hit each in the head.

Before Vancouver’s game on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres, Rick Tocchet was asked his opinion on the suspensions. Tocchet said, “I think it’s just unfortunate. It’s a tough job for the referees. It’s tough for George Parros. Everything—it’s all tough.”

Tocchet continued by touching on the reaction surrounding the suspensions. Since the suspensions were announced, fans in Edmonton, as well as media members and even the team itself, have been flooding social media, arguing that the league has made a horrific mistake in suspending McDavid. For Tocchet, he is ready to move on and believes everyone else should drop it and focus on what they can control.
“I just don’t like the grandstanding. It’s like, well they protect this and it is what it is. I don’t want Connor McDavid to get suspended. We’re playing them. Honestly, You want to play the best. I mean, he’s terrific for the league. He’s unbelievable an unbelievable kid, from what I’ve been told. The way he works at his game is unreal for the game. You know, it happened, so you deal with it. This is the same thing with Mysey (Myers). For me, it’s a tough position for everybody. It’s really hard for everyone sitting on a couch and ripping everybody. I have a tough time with that. A lot of people are grandstanding, ripping the refs. I mean, Wes McCauley is one of the best refs in the league. Okay, there’s a couple holds there that didn’t get called for whatever reason. It was like 10 seconds left. There was a missed high stick, like, we can go back and forth. It’s a three-game suspension, and then it is what it is like. We got to move on from this. That’s what I think.”
The Canucks and Oilers play one more time this season, which falls on Thursday in Edmonton. While McDavid and Myers won’t be playing, there should be some fireworks both on the ice and, based on some media members’ responses, during the pre-game and post-game availabilities. Game time for Thursday night is 6:00 pm PT and can be viewed on Sportsnet.
