MSU listed near bottom of league in latest Big Ten power rankings

Michigan State football has lost its last two games to open Big Ten play, so what does that mean when it comes to power rankings for the league?

The Big Ten Huddle podcast has released updated power rankings following this past weekend’s games and to no surprise Michigan State is near the bottom of the league. The Spartans came in at No. 13 out of 18 teams, which is the same spot as last week as well.

Michigan State is 3-2 overall but 0-2 in Big Ten play after back-to-back road losses at USC and Nebraska. The Spartans will look for their first conference win of the season this week against UCLA.

My thoughts on power rankings

This ranking seems about right for the Spartans, at least for right now. Some of the teams listed ahead of the Spartans (UCLA, Minnesota and Maryland) are in the same class, and could be ranked either ahead or behind Michigan State. The notable issue I’d have with these power rankings, though, is having Penn State ranked below the Spartans. I understand why this was done, but I still wouldn’t pick the Spartans over the Nittany Lions if they played this week.
